Basic Information:

What is a toy dog? According to the American Kennel Club, the breeds classified as "toy" are (in alphabetical order) the Affenpinscher, Brussels Griffon, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, English Toy Spaniel, Havanese, Italian Greyhound, Japanese Chin, Maltese, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Miniature Poodle, Pug, Shi Tzu, Silky Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, and the Yorkshire Terrier.  However, some small dogs from breeds other than these listed and some mixed breeds could be considered "toy" by an average person because "toy" really only means the dog is small.

Even though they are easier to control than larger dogs, they do have unique needs because of their small size. Toy dogs can thrive in a tiny apartment or a house with a huge yard. They can also do well in a family with children. However, it is recommended that the children be old enough so that they can understand how delicate toy dogs are, and the other needs that are exclusive to toys.
