Basic Training:Small dogs have tinier and more fragile bones than larger dogs. This means you must be very careful not to hurt their bones during training. NEVER push, shove, or hit your dog. Always be extremely gentle whenever you are handling your small dog.Training Sit: To train the sit command use a favorite treat or toy as a lure. Hold it just above their nose, and then move it slowly backward (toward their tail). This should cause your small dog to move back onto its haunches. While they are moving back say the command, "Sit." Remember, it make take a while for you to get it just right, do not blame the dog for something you are doing wrong! Training Lay Down: Get your dog into sitting position using the directions above. Then place the lure near the dog's nose, and move it slowly down and forward. Your dog should ease into a laying down position. As he or she is sliding down, say your chosen command such as "Lay down," or just simply "Down." Do not forget to be consistent when choosing commands, if you are not your dog will never know what to think. Training Come: It is a good idea to have your puppy on a leash or confined to a certain area when you start to teach this command. Once your small dog understands and obeys the commands, you can try it in a larger area. However, it is a good idea to do it inside or in a fenced area, so your dog cannot run off. Use a lure or just clap your hands and act excited. While your dog is coming to you, call you dog using the command you have decided on such as, "Spot, come!" Repetition is the key so practice all the commands a lot. |
