Breeders:

It is extremely important to find a good breeder. To start, check you local paper for ads for the small dog breed of your choice. Call a few breeders and find out a few facts. Most breeders have websites which can also be a great way to learn more. If you know someone who has the small dog breed you are seeking, then talk to them for recommendations. Another way to find breeders is online. Although this can be a great way to find a dog, always be sure you can go visit the puppies yourself. Otherwise, you will not know what you are getting into.

Once you find several breeders with available puppies, go and visit. You might want to bring someone else with you because you will be visiting strangers. Always use common sense--if something sounds like a scam, then it probably is. Talk to the breeder about how much attention the puppies get and about their philosiphies of breeding. Check the facilities to see if their are clean and look at the puppies to see if they seem well taken care of. It can also be good idea to sleep on it before you make the final decision. That way you will be able to see beyond the cute, little puppies and into the real situation. However, if the breed you are seeking is in high demand, then this might not be possible. If this is the case, then be sure you are ready for the responsibility of a puppy.

Also, be sure you are prepared to look until you find the right puppy for your lifestyle. A hyper puppy is not good for someone who wants a lap dog. It may take a little patience, but when you do find a good breeder the experience is very rewarding.
