Chihuahuas:

If you decide you want a Chihuahua, you are still faced with one more decision--do you want long or short haired?

The long haired do have some advantages, especially if you want to be able to fix your dog's hair. Also, because they have more hair they keep warmer (which is good if you live in a cold region). You will not have to worry too much about buying sweaters for your puppy.

However, personally I would recommend the short haired variety. It is literally maintenance free. You will rarely have to brush it or wash it. Another perk is that you do not have to cut it. If you want a maintenance free small dog (as far as grooming is concerned) get a short haired Chihuahua.

However so long as you do not mind having to groom your dog regularly, then knock yourself out and get a long haired Chihuahua.

As far as temperment goes, Chihuahuas tend to have a bit of a nervous one. They are extremely wary of strangers and will not hesitate to bark at them. Also, Chihuahuas tend to bond with one person over all others. They usually favor other Chihuahuas over other breeds of dogs. However, they usually are very patient and do not bite excessively (they also have very small teeth!).

The Chihuahua is great for a family so long as the kids understand the needs of such a tiny breed. They are best for a family with older children because younger children tend to be rougher.
