Dog Birthdays:

Many avid small dog lovers will decide to throw a birthday party for their small dog. This can be a great way to celebrate such a key moment in the life of your pet. However, it can also be hazardous to your small dog's safety if certain precautions are not taken.

Party hats are probably not a good idea for several reasons. First, if one is too tight on the dog, it can cause discomfort or worse. In addition, if the hat comes off partially, it could get caught on something and further injure your dog. Try to keep it simple, and remember, safety should always come first.

As far as party food goes, talk to your veterinarian. Birthday cake is probably not a good idea, but most dogs can tolerate plain yogurt. Chocolate can be deadly for some dogs, so stay away from it! You might want to make a separate dessert for humans, just be sure it keeps out of reach of your dog.

For fun birthday game ideas, see our games page. Toys can be great gifts, see our dog toys page for more information about finding the perfect one.

Of course you will want to sing happy birthday to your dog, but stay away from candles because they mean fire. Using them could result in a dangerous situation for both pet and owner, and besides, they cannot blow them out anyway.
