Grooming:

When grooming your small dog, it absolutely necessary to have the right products. If you have the right tools, the experience will be much more enjoyable for you and your small dog.

First, you must find a good kind of shampoo for your dog's hair type. Go to your local pet store and talk with an associate who knows the kinds of shampoos available. You may even be able to find a kind that is specific to your breed of small dog. You can also check into tearless shampoo for your dog's head. This can help to prevent eye irritations because even if you attempt to keep the shampoo out of your dog's eyes, it is inevitable that some will get in.

After you find shampoo, you will need to get a brush. There are many kinds to choose from, and it may take you a while to learn what your dog likes the best. Some dogs like brushes with wire bristles, but they can be too sharp for small dog's with sensitive skin. Other dogs like soft bristles better, but if your dog has lots of thick hair this may not get the job done.

If you have decided to cut your dog's hair yourself, you will want to look into a pair of good grooming scissors. These can usually be found at your local pet store. Go to the library or bookstore and find books with pictures of your dog's breed. If you can find a book specifically about grooming your breed of small dog then get that, too. You can use both of these to help you cut your dog's hair well. You may want to enlist someone else to help hold your dog still, so that your small dog does not get hurt.
