Housetraining:

House training small and toy dogs can be a real pain, but with a little perseverance on the part of the owner, it can be achieved. They have smaller bladders, so they cannot hold it in very long. First, it is a good idea to keep your dog in the crate when he cannot be supervised. This prevents her from being able to have accidents in places you will not notice. However, make sure that your small dog gets sufficient exercise and time outside of his crate. Second, it is a good idea to keep the dog in a confined area where there is easy clean up. This could actually be in exchange for the crate if you decided to keep him or her in an area like a bathroom.

When you are at home, keep the dog close to you. You can block off the kitchen or the family room--wherever you spend the most time. Another option is to put the dog on the leash and then tie the leash around your waist. If you decide to go this route, you will have to be especially careful not to step on the puppy. Remember, they do not know anything until you teach them.

In a firm voice tell the puppy, "No." whenever you catch them having an accident. Do not scold them if they are not in the act. Puppies do not understand cause and effect. It is impossible for them to understand that you are scolding them because they made a mess and not because they are chewing on their toy. Immediately take them outside, and praise them anytime they go to the bathroom outside.

Be sure to thoroughly clean up the mess. You must be careful to be sure no smell of the accident remains. One good way to do this is to use a vinegar-water solution. Put about one third vinegar with two-thirds water. This will help to clear-up any smell left by the accident so the dog will not remember the spot. Test the solution on a small area before using it, to be sure it will not hurt the material you will use it on.
