Liver Shunt:

There is a generally hereditary disease called liver shunt that is common in small dogs. Although afflicted small dogs will have the condition from birth, it may not be obvious until over five years later. Liver shunt is when a portion or all of the dogs blood stream is shut off from the liver. This results in the blood not being cleaned.

Common indicators of liver shunt are little gain of weight, weakness, problems balancing, and a poor appetite. If your dog exhibits these signs, be sure to contact your veterinarian. After years of this happening, effects may start to show up.

Liver shunt can sometimes be detected in a puppy using a blood test. It is recommended to have your puppy tested before you buy it,or during the time the breeder guarantees it.
