Living with Multiple Small Dogs:

Living with multiple dogs can be a real challenge, but with a little hard work and determination, it can turn out to be a very rewarding experience. First of all, it is not recommended to have two puppies at the same time for several reasons. If you choose to do this, chances are that the two puppies will bond to each other and not with you. Also, it means you will have to clean up double the messes and spend double the time training, playing, etc. For most people (especially if they are first time dog owners), this proves to be too big of a commitment. So, generally, only get one puppy at a time.

If you do get a puppy and you already have a dog, introducing them together is an extremely important step. Try to get them to meet each other at a place where the dog does not normally go so that he does not feel that the puppy is threatening his territory. Be sure that they are supervised at all times, and do not overdo it. If they are not that interested in each other, that is okay.

Once you bring them into the house, always be sure that they are supervised whenever they are together. Put one or both dogs in crates when you leave the house. Even if you trust your older dog, puppies can easily annoy older dogs. It is a good idea to give your dog a place where he can escape the puppy to help further prevent altercations. No matter how hard you try, however, you will probably not be able to keep their toys separate. Just try to be sure that there are plenty of their favorite toys around, even if it means buying multiples of the same kind of toy.
