Rescue a Dog:

Every year, hundreds of small dogs are placed into shelters with no one to love them. Although adopting a rescued small dog is not for everyone, it is something a prospective owner should look into. Many types of small dogs have breed-specific organizations which can help you find a dog of a certain breed that needs to be rescued. You will want to find out about any aggressive behavior the dog has displayed, the amount of house-training it has had, and as much about its past situation as possible.

If you are a timid, first-time dog owner, the training challenge rescue is probably not for you. The dog with the saddest story is not necessarily the best dog for you. The most important thing is to be realistic about your abilities and the time you have to put into a dog; you and your new dog will be happier for it.
